Hi Everyone! It’s First Line Friday, so grab a book near you and share your first line in the comments below!
Today I’m sharing the first line from The Ruby Knot by Jane Josephs, which I gave a 5-star review in my latest Kathleen’s Readers’ Club newsletter. (If you’re not already a member, sign up now!)
Here is the first line:
Katie Ryan smiled at the picture of her first trimester ultrasound sitting among the baby supplies on her dresser.
Graphic Designer Katie Ryan is about to have a baby, the consequence of a romantic encounter with Navy Special Forces âboat guyâ CJ Jansen in Las Vegas. Back home in San Diego, Katie is determined to get her life back on track, and finds herself drawn to pastoral intern Noah Davidson. But CJ isnât about to ignore his son, and soon Katie finds herself torn between her feelings for two very different men. With her sonâs future at stake, Katie is faced with a choice: should she stay with the plan sheâs made, or follow her heart?

Happy Friday! My first line is from “Rebecca’s Legacy” by Betty Thomason Owens:
“Are you crazy? My father’s going to kill me.”
That’s a great first line. Thank you for sharing!
On my blog, I’m featuring Karen Witemeyer’s novella, “The Love Knot.” Since I’m still reading it, I will share the first lines in Chapter 7. “Claire pushed away from the paddock fence when she saw Pieter exit the station house. Her heart ached with yearning at the sight of him. She still loved him. Desperately. But she wouldn’t pledge her life to a man until she was certain of him.” I wish you a relaxing fall weekend. Cooler weather has finally arrived in Michigan.
I love that beginning, but then again, I love Karen’s writing. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday! My first line is from The Lady of Bolton Hill by Elizabeth Camden.
PROLOGUE
Baltimore, Maryland, 1867
“Come on, boy. Your dad needs you.”
I love Elizabeth’s books. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday!đ
My first lines come from Snowfall on Lighthouse Lane by JoAnn Ross…..
Life, as Aiden Mannion knew firsthand, could be dangerous. Anything could happen. You could be hit by a taxi while sightseeing in Times Square. Run headfirst into a tree while shushing down a diamond run pretending you were Bode Miller.
Have a great weekend and Happy Fall!đ
Well that sounds like a rather oddly specific example. LOL Thanks for sharing!
My first line is from A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris:
A sharp clatter jerked Grace Callahan out iof the novel she was reading.
Great suspenseful book!
Don’t you just hate it when something interrupts your reading? đ Thanks for sharing!
Iâm featuring lines from A.K. MacBrideâs upcoming release Shattered on my blog.
Here, Iâm sharing lines from Rachael Brownellâs Chasing Fate. Itâs my quirky blind date with a book this month.
âWhat do you mean, you quit your job?â
Happy Reading!
Ha! That is a great first line. Thanks for sharing.
What a sweet first line! Iâm sharing from a Christmas novella on my blog. Here Iâll share from Belle: An Amish Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Sarah Price:
âSunflowers always made Belle happy. Very happy.â
Happy Friday!
Aww. I love sunflowers.
I’m not necessarily a fan of the love triangle trope (mostly because someone always loses), but this one sounds like it has promise.
Iâve been on a romantic suspense reading kick recently, so my first line is from Tell Her No Lies by Kelly Irvin. Itâs an unusual first line, but the novel definitely ticks all the romantic suspense boxes!
Have a great wekend!
I know what you mean but, without giving too much away, this one works out pretty well.
The book I shared this week is Freedom’s Light by Colleen Coble but I’m currently reading an ARC of The Liberty Bride by MaryLu Tyndall so I’ll share the first line here: “What would it feel like to drownâŠto float listlessly down⊠down⊠beneath the chilled waters of the Atlantic?” I can honestly say I don’t want to find out! Hope you have a great weekend with lots of reading time! đ
Wow. That isn’t the most cheerful first line, but it certainly grabs your attention. Thanks for sharing!
