US Secret Service Special Agent Luke Powell is lucky to be alive. Three of his fellow agents have died in unusual circumstances in the past ten weeks. Luke is devastated by the loss of his friends and colleagues, and his inability to locate the killer feels like a personal failure. He’s an expert at shielding others, but now the protectors are in need of protection.

FBI Special Agent Faith Malone is driven to succeed and confident in her ability to solve every case she’s assigned. She’s been put in charge of the investigation into the unprecedented attacks, and with Luke’s life in danger, the stakes have never been higher. But it’s hard to know how to fight back when you don’t know who the enemy is.

As more agents are targeted, Luke and Faith will have to work together to bring a killer to justice and prevent any more names from joining their fallen brothers and sisters on the Secret Service Wall of Honor.

Why This Book:

Since this book shared a book-birthday with my own Sing in the Sunlight, I noticed this title floating around social media and read the premise. I was in the mood for a romantic suspense and the premise for this one sounded intriguing. Add to this that I’d been meaning to try Lynn Blackburn’s writing for a while (many book bloggers have raved about her books), and I decided to grab the audible version of this novel. (My eyes were sore from too much computer time, so listening was easier.)

First Impressions:

The first scene kicks things off with a bang. Literally. Several, in fact. And the suspense takes off from there.

Main Characters:

US Secret Service Special Agent Luke Powell was raised to despise the FBI and has recently lost his colleage and friend in a mysterious car bombing that left more questions than answers, but he’s leaning on his faith and his skills to find his way through.

FBI Special Agent Faith Malone has been tasked with solving the mystery surrounding unprecedented recent attacks and she’s confident in her ability to succeed–until she’s not. Then she’s forced to reexamine everything.

Emotional Engagement & Pacing of the Story:

From page one I related to these characters and wanted to see them survive and thrive. The action unfolded like the best government agent action movies and I couldn’t put the book down. I kept reading into the wee hours of the morning two days in a row, despite pressing to-do lists.

Elements I Especially Liked/Disliked:

Everything felt real and you could tell the author had done her research. More than a series of high-stakes events, this story involved real character development.

FAITH ELEMENT:

Without losing a bit of the action-packed suspense, Blackburn managed to weave in the spiritual side of these characters and show how God uses their experiences to help them grow.

ENDING:

While I wasn’t entirely surprised with the final answers, the way it all played out was not what I would call predictable. I was captivated to the very last word and the epilogue was just realistic enough and sweet enough to suit me perfectly.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS:

This was my first novel by Lynn Blackburn, but it will definitely not be my last. I look forward to reading more by her!

Overall Rating:

5 out of 5 stars
