Hi Everyone! It’s First Line Friday, so grab a book near you and share your first line in the comments below!
Today I’m sharing the first line from High Desert Haven by Lynnette Bonner. I listened to the Audible version of this book a few years back and recently relistened to it while doing some crafting. It’s a unique story with some decidedly darker moments and situations that have no black and white solutions. I like it because it challenges me in a way that not all stories do. It is also the second in Bonner’s The Shepherd’s Heart series.
***Edited to update:ย I just found out the first book in this series, Rocky Mountain Oasis, is currently available in ebook form for FREE from all retailers. I’m not sure how long this will be the case, so be sure to pick up your copy today! ๐ ***
Here is the first line:
California
July 1883
As Dominique Noel Vasquez methodically scrubbed clothes in the soapy water, she listened to the quiet, strained tones of her parents who sat against the shady side of the house.
Is Jason Jordan really who he says he is?
Everything in Nickiโs life depends on the answer.
Oregon, 1887
When her husband dies in a mysterious riding accident, Nicki Trent is left with a toddler and a rundown ranch. Determined to bring her ranch back from the brink of death, Nicki hires handsome Jason Jordan to help. But when William, her neighbor, starts pressing for her hand in marriage, the bank calls in a loan she didnโt even know about, bullets start flying, and a burlap dummy with a knife in its chest shows up on her doorstep, Nicki wonders if this ranch is worth all the trouble.
To make matters worse, terrible things keep happening to her neighbors. When her friendโs homestead is burned to the ground and William lays the blame at Jasonโs feet, Nicki wonders how well she knows her new handโฆand her own heart.
A desperate need. Malicious adversaries. Enticing love.
Step into a day when outlaws ran free, the land was wild, and guns blazed at the drop of a hat.

Looks like an interesting read! I love the cover art too!
It was quite different from anything else I’ve ever read.
Sounds like a story that will draw you in and keep you reading!
It is. Thanks for stopping by!
Happy Friday!๐
My first lines come from a book I will be reading shortly, Unleashed by Donna Kauffman.
Emma Laffertyโs life had gone to the dogs. Literally. And to the cats. And the parakeets, goldfish, hamsters, even the occasional potbelly pig. What it and her fledgling pet-sitting service hadnโt gone to was her bank account. Not enough, anyway.
Have a great weekend and happy reading!๐๐๐
LOL Uh-oh. Sounds like she needs a new business plan. Thanks for sharing!
Iโm featuring lines from Danielle Normanโs upcoming release Roadster on my blog.
Here, Iโm sharing lines from Keira Montclairโs Falling for the Chieftan. Itโs her new historical time travel romance.
โAllison Suttonโs feet hit water as she plunged into the murky liquid at the base of the cascading falls.โ
Happy Reading!
Thanks for sharing! ๐
This sounds like it needs to be in my TBR pile. ๐ I”m featuring Starting From Scratch by Kate Lloyd on my blog, so here is a line from page 11:
“A few minutes later I sat on the suitcase’s lid while Marta fastened the metal latches with gusto.”
Happy Friday!
Sounds like someone is eager to get away. ๐ Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing about High Desert Haven, Kathleen. I’m glad you were challenged by the story. I’m always challenged as I write them. ๐ For those who might be interested in the series, the first book, Rocky Mountain Oasis, is currently free in eBook form from all book retailers.
Also, I’ll share the first line from Rebecca’s Song, by Dawn Kinzer.
Riverton Wisconsin
September 1905
“Willie Grayson! Don’t you dare throw another punch!”

Hi, Lynnette! How nice of you to stop by! ๐ I admit I’m curious how you found out about my post. I wish I’d known about your first book being free so I could have put that in the original post. Thank you for letting us know! ๐ I remember enjoying Rocky Mountain Oasis as well. I think it was the first of your books that I ever read.
That line from Rebecca’s Song is a great opener. I’ll have to check it out.
Thank you for sharing! ๐
I have my name set up on an alert so that I can try to keep up with everything. ๐
That’s clever. ๐
Happy Saturday!
Yesterday on my blog, I shared the first lines from Cara Putman’s novel Delayed Justice. Here I will share the first line from the novel I’m currently reading, An Unpresentable Glory by Eleanor Gustafson.
“On her return from church, Kileenda Jensen discovered a problem, and it had nothing to do with her name.”
Hope you have an awesome weekend!!! ๐๐งก๐
I know I’m late for Friday, so happy Labor Day weekend! My first line is from Under Prairie Skies by Cynthia Roemer.
“The sound of a spry whistle froze Charlotte Stanton in her tracks. She tightened her hold on her bucket of creek water, eyes narrowing.”
Thank you for sharing! Have a fun weekend!
