Hi Everyone! It’s First Line Friday, so grab a book near you and share your first line in the comments below!
Today I’m sharing the first line from a book I picked up at the 2018Β Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference, Love’s Surprise by Karen Ball.
Here is the first line:
MISSION CONTROL
“Mr. Hawk, you have a special delivery.”
In this collection of three whimsical and fresh stories of romance in unusual settings, Karen Ball’s writing will delight readers of all ages and in every season. Infused with love, tenderness and humor, the stories are threaded together with common characters and themes.
The protagonist in “Valentine’s Surprise” has been unlucky in love, so her sisters conspire and set her up with a blind date they’re sure will be “The One.” The date is surprisingly successful…until she discovers she went out with the wrong man!
In “Jericho’s Walls,” a widow’s grown children try to forestall her annual April Fools’ Day depression. They trick her into pet-sitting a ferret, and talk her into a major house renovation–to be done by the good-looking but distant Jericho Katz, whose spouse also has died. But can you help someone who doesn’t think she wants it?
“An Unlikely Angel” is the story of a very successful lawyer who believes he’s got everything he wants and needs in life. Then a charming but destructive Siberian Husky turns up. The man comes to learn what is truly valuable, with help from an even more charming and quirky girl-next-door, and the gentle nudge of…an angel?

The stories sound entertaining. π On my blog this week I am featuring βSaving Truthβ by Abdu Murray, Finding Meaning & Clarity in a Post-Truth World. Since I am still currently reading this book, I will share the first two lines from Chapter 4. βHistoryβs most influential person expressly binds freedom to the limits of truth. βYou will know the truth,β Jesus says, βand the truth will set you free.β (John 8:32)β May your weekend be a refreshing one for you.
Thanks for stopping by! π
My first line is from Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse.
Ten-year-old Faith Lytton placed her hands on her hips βlike Mama did when she was exasperatedβ and looked at the sad little group of puny troops allotted to her.
Ha ha. That sounds like a fun character. Thanks for sharing! π
Happy Friday, Kathleen! π
My first line comes from The Trial by Robert Whitlow.
PROLOGUE
Truth will come to light; murder cannot be hid long.
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, ACT 2, SCENE 2
Celeste Jamison tossed and turned but couldn’t sleep.
Hmmm. Sounds like a page-turner. Thanks for sharing! π
Happy Friday! My first line is from Love is Patient by Lila Diller:
“I flipped through the pages of the bridal magazine yet again, from one dogeared page to the next, dreaming and desiring.”
Happy Friday! Thanks for sharing! π
That’s an unexpected first line for such a pretty-covered book. But I like it. I’m not near any books right thise second (isn’t that horrifying!).
It IS horrifying! And absolutely unacceptable. No one should ever be without a book! π Have you tried any reading apps? I’m assuming that since you are online you have a digital device of some kind. To my way of thinking, every digital device must provide some form of reading – either audiobooks or ebooks. Any digital device which lacks this capability simply shouldn’t exist. Also, many libraries now have digital catalogs that allow you to “check out” digital books for free. So really, there is no reason to ever be without a good book. π Ha ha. Nevertheless, I am grateful you stopped by and I do hope you remedy your current situation so that you may have a very pleasant weekend! π
This looks like a good read!
I just started “Nice to Come Home To” by Liz Flaherty. The first line is: Why didn’t you ever come back here?
Have a great weekend!
Sounds like a valid question, to me. π Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday!
I shared the first line of Veronica Roth’s Carve the Mark on my blog today. Here, though, I’ll share the book I’ve just started to read – A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan.
“Once upon a time, a little girl helplessly watched as liquid gold spun a web across her tiny frame, racing to wrap her up in an icy cocoon.”
I hope you enjoyed that. Happy weekend and happy reading! π
Oh my. That does not sound like it is going to end well. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday!π
My first line comes from a book I will be reading soon, Oh My Stars by Sally Kilpatrick.
And it came to pass in those days, that a decree went out from my mother that I would be playing the Virgin Mary in the Dollar General drive-through Nativity whether I liked it or not.
Haha! I love those first lines and canβt wait to read this book!
Have a great weekend and happy reading!ππ
LOL That does sound like a fun read. Thanks for sharing! π
Happy Friday!
Looks cute!
Iβm reading Catch-22 by Joseph Heller right now, so hereβs the first line: βIt was love at first sight.β
Hallie @ Book by Book
I do believe I have heard of that book. π Happy Friday!
Happy Friday!
The book I shared on my blog this week is Auschwitz Lullaby but it’s also what I just finished reading so I’ll share my favorite quote from the book here: βSometimes we have to lose everything to find what is most important. When life robs us of what we thought we could not live without and leaves us standing naked before reality, the essential things that had always been invisible take on their true value.β Hope you have a great weekend!
Wow. That is a strong statement. Thanks for sharing.
Over on my blog, I’m showcasing the first line from Carolyn Miller’s new novel, Miss Serena’s Secret. It’s SO good. I’m almost finished with the book, so here I will share the first line of chapter 26.
“I cannot help you.”
A bit blunt and harsh! Lol.
I hope you’re having an awesome weekend filled with great reading time. πβ€π
Thanks for sharing.
