Whether you’re looking for a good book or just curious what others are reading, you’ve come to the right place. Each Friday I pick a book and share the first line with you. This week I am sharing the first line from Turtles in the Road by Rhonda Rhea and Kaley Rhea.
Here’s the first line:
Normally a nice long solo drive had a calming effect on Piper.
This is definitely a case of not judging a book by its cover. Objectively, I can say this book has a cute cover. Subjectively, I know I never would have given it a second glance if I hadn’t spotted it in another book blogger’s post. I don’t know why. Maybe because the cover tells me absolutely nothing about the book. So, for the sake of explaining why I gave this book another look, here is the description:
Sometimes a detour takes you exactly where you need to be.
Piper Cope was so sure the Lord called her to be a pastor’s wife. So when her pastor/fiancé breaks it off, she’s every kind of puzzled. Does God even have a purpose for her anymore? On the road halfway between the bridges she’s burned and some kind of new start, she encounters the most unexpected detour. She swerves on a rainy road to miss a turtle and ends up in a ditch with an airbag to the face. Now stuck in this little town, she wonders how in the world she could’ve gotten her God-signals so very crossed. And how in the world is she supposed to know what He wants her to do now? In the meantime, at least the community center guy, Jay Marler, has her working a temporary job there. Problem is, somehow she’s coaching a children’s basketball team. She does not…basketball. And she certainly does not children.
It was those last three lines that really snagged me. Something about the humor in them appealed to me. I got a sense of the personality hiding in the pages of this book. So I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. If you decide to give it a try, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Now it’s your turn! Grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first (or your favorite) line!
Then head on over and share your first line with these friends:

Oh my. One of the funniest books ever!
I’ve got the first line from “Will Not See” by Chautona Havig over on my blog today. Since it’s the second book in the ‘Sight Unseen’ series, I thought I would share the first line (or two) from the first book in the series, “None So Blind”, here:
“Her arm stretched out from beneath the covers. Later, she would admit that in that moment her world changed irrevocably.”
Have a great weekend!
Huge hands ripped at Cole Sanders’ shirt and yanked him away from Audrey Vaughn’s embrace. Tackling the Fields by Janet Ferguson
Have a wonderful weekend!
I have never heard of this book! Thanks for sharing because that cover is super cute. I want those boots!
I’m featuring “A Name Unknown” by Roseanna M. White on the blog today, but the closest book I have to me right now is “The Writing Desk” by Rachel Hauck.
“This should by night of triumph. To be queen of her world. An acclaimed, best-selling, award-winning author with the literati bowing at her feet.”
Happy Weekend!
Intriguing book! One time my husband picked up a huge turtle in the road, put it in the truck bed, and brought it home for the kids to see. It kept us awake all night as it tried to get out of the bed. Evidently it wanted to get back to the river and lay its eggs, and it was not happy the next day as he tried to release it!
Happy Friday! My first line is from Destitutio by Brett Armstrong, which I am excited to start reading:
“The grisly, grey swirls churned up before Marcus, a thin mask to the merciless heat.”
That does sound super cute and interesting!
This weekend I’m reading Kim Vogel Sawyer’s “Bringing Maggie Home.” I’m a little over halfway and it’s such a GREAT read! Here’s the first line:
Mid-July 1943
“Hazel set a porcelain cup and saucer on the overturned apple crate in front of her little sister. ‘Madam, would you like cream and sugar in your tea?'”
Hmm… that does sound like an interesting book.
My first line this week is from Vow Unbroken by Caryl McAdoo
“He took the pinch of cotton Sue offered and rubbed it between his short, pudgy fingers.”
Definitely want to add this to my TBR pile! Love your post.
I’m currently in the middle of reading Rule of Law by Randy Singer. It’s not typically a genre (military/legal) I read, but it’s so engaging. Here’s the first line:
“They descended like vultures from the C-17 transport plane, silhouettes against a quarter moon in a tar-black sky.”
Would love to hear how you like Turtles in the Road after you have read it! Thanks for sharing!
This is a cute cover, but not one that I wouldn’t pick up based on the cover alone, however after reading the description I’m intrigued. I’ve added it to my TBR pile.
Please come back and let me know what you think after you have read it! I love talking books! Thanks for stopping by!
