Whether you’re looking for a good book or just curious what others are reading, you’ve come to the right place. Each Friday I pick a book and share the first line with you. This week I am stepping outside my typical genre and sharing the first line from The Girl Who Could See by Kara Swanson. However, it isn’t too far outside my genre, because even though it is a speculative fiction novella, it IS Christian (though not overtly) and it DOES have a romance. Plus… I absolutely LOVED it!
Isn’t that cover just gorgeous?
Here’s the first line:
Present Time
On television crime shows, they never tell you how cold it is.
Since this book is a little different than my usual pick for FLF, I’m going to share the back cover description as well:
All her life Fern has been told she is blind to reality—but, what if she is the only one who can truly see?
Fern Johnson is crazy. At least, that’s what the doctors have claimed since her childhood. Now nineteen, and one step away from a psych ward, Fern struggles to survive in bustling Los Angeles. Desperate to appear normal, she represses the young man flickering at the edge of her awareness—a blond warrior only she can see.
Tristan was Fern’s childhood imaginary hero, saving her from monsters under her bed and outside her walls. As she grew up and his secret world continued to bleed into hers, however, it only caused catastrophe. But, when the city is rocked by the unexplainable, Fern is forced to consider the possibility that this young man is not a hallucination after al—and that the creature who decimated his world may be coming for hers.
Now it’s your turn! Grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first (or your favorite) line!
Then head on over and share your first line with these friends:

Happy Friday!! My first line us from A Matter of Trust by Susan May Warren: “Gage Watson blamed the trouble on the bright, sunny day.”
That is a popular book. Have you read it? I’m curious what you think. I haven’t read it yet.
I absolutely LOVED this book! I have read all of her books, and love following her characters around in the subsequent books. I love her style of writing, and feel so encouraged when I read them. I love how she develops her characters. She is one of my favorite authors!
Wow. That is great to know. Thanks! 🙂
Oh I loved this book! It was so different and fun.
I just started Cara Putnam’s Beyond Justice. “If he didn’t find that flash drive now, he would have to disappear.”
Yes! It was very different from anything I have read before.
I love the first line you shared. Thanks! 🙂
Jessica! That makes me so happy ^_^ I’m glad you liked it!
Wow! That does sound interesting. Not the type of book I typically read, but I am now interested to know what happens.
Right? The cover intrigued me, and of course, since I met Kara I wanted to read the first page, but then I couldn’t stop reading. It was so unique and compelling. 🙂
<3 Awww you ladies are going to make me blush 😉 I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Kathleen! And I hope you enjoy it too, Joy, if you give it a try 🙂
Happy Friday!
My first line comes from Julian Fellowes’s Belgravia.
The past, as we have been told so many times, is a foreign country where things are done differently.
Wow. I have never thought of it that way before, but it fits. Thanks for sharing!
“Mrs. Ferrars died on the night of the 16th-17th September — a Thursday.” This first line is from, “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd,” by Agatha Christie.
Have a great weekend. 🙂
Well. I think it’s safe to say that was not a good day for Mrs. Ferrars. 😉 But it sounds like the start of a good mystery. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday!
Thanks. Same to you! 🙂
Happy Friday! It is a different book from my typical one, but it is so good! It’s kind of an allegory.
🙂 So glad you like it! <3
It’s so refreshing to read something unique AND compelling! 🙂
Mr.—–. I glanced down at my seating chart, heart drumming in my ears. From Playing by Heart by Anne Mateer.
Great book!
Thanks for sharing! I like the title of that book. 🙂
Sounds interesting…I’ll have to add it to my wishlist.
My first line is from Anne Love’s “The Gardener’s Daughter” in the Of Rags and Riches romance collection.
Thump, Thump. She could plant herself in a library world such as this one forever.
Awww I can relate to that first line 🙂
And I hope you enjoy my novella if you give it a try! 🙂
Oooh. Staying in a library forever isn’t the same as staying anywhere else. You may physically be in one place, but mentally, emotionally, you can be anywhere!
That cover is beautiful <3
Thank you so much! 🙂
Isn’t it?
I love the cover. Happy Friday!
Thank you! ^_^
It is beautiful, isn’t it? Happy Friday!
AWWW! Thank you for sharing! <3 You're such a sweetheart, Kathleen. So blessed to know you! ^_^
My pleasure. I love sharing great books! 🙂
It’s exciting to step out of our comfort zones every now and then 😉
Yes! And it can be like a breath of fresh air, too, simply for being different. When it’s awesome on top of being different? Yessss! 🙂
