Welcome to First Line Friday! Each Friday I pick a book and share the first line with you. In return, I hope you’ll share with me a first line from whatever book you have at hand!
This week I am sharing the first line from a book by an author I haven’t yet read, but am excited to try. It’s The Convenient Groom by Denise Hunter, and apparently it has even been made into a Hallmark Channel movie.
Here’s the first line:
The red light on Kate Lawrence’s cell phone blinked a staccato warning.
Here’s the description:
She wrote the book–literally–on finding the right mate. But does she really understand what love’s about?
Five hours before her Nantucket beach wedding–and on the eve of her big book launch–celebrity marriage counselor Kate Lawrence has everything in place.
Everything, that is, but the groom. She might not have a career, either, when her nationwide audience finds out their marriage guru has been left at the altar.
Enter Lucas Wright, who offers to stand in for the missing husband-to-be and marry her. Kate’s desperate enough to agree–although she’s sure this Mr. Wright is completely wrong for her. But can they pull it off? And why would Lucas marry her in the first place?
Could it be that “Dr. Kate” doesn’t know the first thing about love?
An inspiring tale of enduring love set in romantic Nantucket.
Each Romance For Good™ novel offers a story of hope and love that positively portrays the eternal impact of relationships.
Now it’s your turn! Grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first (or your favorite) line!
Then head over to Hoarding Books to see who else is participating:
Over on my blog I’m sharing the first line from Sarah Monzon’s latest book just released this week; “The Esther Paradigm”. I’m just over half-way through the book, and I’m loving the story. But you’ll have to go over there to read the first line for The Esther Paradigm. Here I’ll share with you the first line from an older favorite.
Bedford, England — May 1659
“The babe’s crying would rip her heart to shreds if she had to listen to it one more minute.” — The Preacher’s Bride by Jody Hedlund
Oh, I have read The Preacher’s Bride. It was my first Jody Hedlund novel. Excellent writing! Definitely a different kind of life back then.
Thanks for sharing!
This is my FAVORITE Denise Hunter book!!!!!! #swoon
LOL Then I guess I picked a good one to start with. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
I have this book on my TBR list!
Happy Friday!!! Today, I’m showcasing A Mother For His Family by Susanne Dietze. So here I will share the first two lines from the novel next in line on my review pile, Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan.
“You can’t call that a settlement offer.” Kate Sullivan looked directly into the dark eyes of her opposing counsel, who represented a medical device company.
Thank you for sharing! Happy Friday!
I love Hallmark movies! I will have to look this story up. 🙂 Happy Friday!
I haven’t seen the movie. We don’t get the Hallmark channel, unfortunately. I catch the few I can on Netflix.
Oh, I’ve read that one and seen the movie. Though I have to say that I didn’t care for the movie. The characters were all wrong. 🙂
My first line is from Masquerade by Janette Rallison. This is the second time I’ve read the book and I enjoyed it every bit as much as the first time.
“Opportunity didn’t knock for Slade Jacobson – it rang his cell phone at 10:34 pm while he was putting his daughter to bed for the third time.”
Ha! What a great first line! Thank you for sharing!
I haven’t read this one yet, but I hear a lot about it. I’ll have to read it when I get the chance. (Ha!)
I’m featuring the first line from Pepper Basham’s ‘Charming the Troublemaker’ on my blog, but I’m going to leave you with the first line of a book I’ll be reviewing tomorrow, ‘The Bachelor Missions’ by Jes Drew:
“One bulky figure stands alone in the rain, keeping his head down–his identity obscured by a hat and large raincoat.”
Yes. Word of mouth is why I read it as well. I’ll be sure to check out your review. Thank you for sharing!
I’m also sharing from a Denise Hunter book on my blog this week – Blue Ridge Sunrise.
I’m currently reading the Regency Brides collection. Here’s the first line to the second novella in the book, Masquerade Melody by Angela Bell:
Whoever coined the phrase to “bite one’s tongue” was sorely mistaken in believing that silence inflicted mere physical harm.
Oooh. Great first line! It makes me wonder what silence has cost the character speaking. Thanks for sharing!
I have this book somewhere. I really need to read it. I wish Netflix had the movie because I don’t have cable. Haha.
I’m featuring The Princess Bride on my blog, but I’m currently reading Meg Mitchell & the Secret of the Journals by Kimberly McNeil so I’ll share that here.
Prologue
If I say I go to the White Raven for the food, I’d be lying, and I’m a journalist, which means I don’t lie.
Happy Friday!
Yes. It would be nice to see the movie version, if only to satisfy my curiosity on how far it strays from the book.
I am not a huge fan of The Princess Bride movie (although my husband is), is the book better?
Your first line intrigues me. Thanks for sharing!
I still haven’t watched the Hallmark version of this! Denise Hunter is always a wonderful read.
The first line of the book I’m currently reading is:
England, December 23, 1813
Holly Gray’s courage faded with every step she took deeper inside the castle conservatory where, according to Grandfather’s stories, a ghost resided.
Christmas Secrets by Donna Hatch
Let’s see, A Denise Hunter book and a Hallmark movie?? um…..AWESOME! I love both 🙂
I loved this book.
My first line is “Sometimes leading also means following. Sometimes being first means you actually arrive second.” Service Tales by Ace Collins
