Hey Everyone! It’s First Line Friday. So grab a book near you and share the first line in the comments below!
Today I’m sharing the first lines from The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz, a book I’ve recently added to my Kindle and can’t wait to read.
Here is the first line:
On this day, 8 August, 1778, a child was safely delivered . . .
Nay, not safely. Anything but safely.
The American Revolution is finally over, and Sophie Menzies is starved for good news. When her nearest neighbor, General Seamus Ogilvy, finally comes home to Tall Acre, she hopes it is a sign of better days to come. But the general is now a widower with a small daughter in desperate need of a mother. Nearly destitute, Sophie agrees to marry Seamus and become the mistress of Tall Acre in what seems a safe, sensible arrangement. But when a woman from the general’s past returns without warning, the ties that bind this fledgling family together will be strained to the utmost. When all is said and done, who will be the rightful mistress of Tall Acre?

This first line sounds quite ominous.
Thanks for stopping by.
Happy Friday!
I shared the first couple of lines from Melanie Dickerson’s 9th book for her Hagenheim series “The Warrior Maiden” on my blog. I enjoyed reading that book and will be reviewing it soon.
Here, though, I will be sharing the first few lines from my current read “Carve the Mark” by Veronica Roth.
“Hushflowers always bloomed when the night was longest. The whole city celebrated the day the bundle of petals peeled apart into rich red – partly because hushflowers were their nation’s lifeblood, and partly, Akos thought, to keep them all from going crazy in the cold.”
Carve the Mark has long been on my TBR and I’m happy that I finally get to read it. I’m enjoying it so far, and I hope you enjoyed those lines as well.
May your weekend be filled with great books! 😀
Isn’t it marvelous when we finally get to a book that’s been languishing on our TBR? Thanks for sharing!
That’s an intriguing first line! Happy Friday! My first line is from “Yesterday’s Promises” by Kimberly Rae Jordan:
“Danica Callaghan sank down on the lowest of the wide, built-in, carpeted risers and surveyed her handiwork.”
Ooh. I love that moment when you’ve finished a project and can just sit and admire the results. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Another wonderful book by Laura Frantz!! I read this one several years ago and really enjoyed it! Maybe it’s about time to pull it out and read it again 🙂
LOL I didn’t realize it had been around so long. I don’t recall what brought it to my attention, but I’m glad it happened. I’m really enjoying the read (even if my sleep has been a little – okay a lot – less than usual as a result). Thanks for stopping by!
I love Laura’s stories! This one is on my shelf!
This is my first Laura Frantz. I’ve been meaning to read her for a while, but don’t think I’ve gotten round to any till now. Loving it so far and will definitely be reading more. Thanks for stopping by!
My first lines are from When You Look At Me by Pepper Basham:
Chapter Six:
The mountains carried thier own song. A melody beginning with soft brass, perhaps a stray violin solo- or even more accurate to the history of these hills- an Irish flute, grew in his thoughts to a full orchestral explosion as vast as the blue horizon.
I loved that book! Thanks for stopping by!
Happy Friday! On my blog, I am featuring a book by J. Stephen Lang, The Christian History Devotional. Here, I will share a couple lines from the chapter I’m currently on. “1731: One of the world’s most famous books happens to be a Christian book, though most people think of it as an adventure story. It is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, published in 1719.” I wish you a wonderful weekend.
Wow. I haven’t heard of The Christian History Devotional, but it sounds like a fascinating read. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Can I have the house in the background??! Happy reading Kathleen!
LOL It is pretty, isn’t it? 🙂
I have this book on my list as well.
My line is from the book, Almost Home, a story told through the eyes of a 13-year-old Mary Chilton, a Pilgrim separatist, and her life in Holland, the voyage on the Mayflower and lastly to the New World.
“All my life I yearned to belong. Heavenly Father, is this the place I hungered for? Did You plant a longing for this America in my heart? Mary turned to go help her friends, but she wished she had remembered to bring her oilcloth-wrapped bundle to open here in America.”
Sounds like an interesting read. Thanks for sharing!
I read that book a long time ago!
My first lines come from The Warrior Maiden by Melanie Dickerson:
“Galloping her horse past the big oak tree, Mulan pulled the bowstring taut. She aimed at the knothole with one eye closed and sent the arrow flying toward the target.”

I am in love with this cover! I’ll add it to my wish list. Thanks for sharing it. I’m featuring Emma Rous’ The Au Pair if you’d like to stop by! I’m also a blog follower/subscriber.
That’s great. So glad you discovered a new read! 🙂 And thank you for following me. 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend!
Ooh looks good! Adding to my TBR 🙂
On my blog today I shared the first line from The Forgiving Jar by Wanda E Brunstetter but I’m currently about to start Breach of Trust by Rachel Dylan so I’ll share the first line from that book here: “Mia Shaw gripped a bundle of brightly colored helium balloons with the word congratulations splashed all over them.” Hope you have a great weekend with plenty of quality reading time!
Hmmm maybe a birthday party in the works? Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday! That was my first Laura Frantz and I loved it. I’m sharing the first lines from One Mind’s Eye by Kathy Tyers today, here are the lines that follow:
“Llyn Torfinn stood at an i-net station, listening nervously, clasping her thin left arm with her right hand. Not much muscle padded the bones.”
Hope you have a good weekend.
Hmmm I wonder what an i-net station is. Is it just one of those computers at the library or cafes that let you get online? I haven’t heard that term before. Thanks for sharing!
Possibly, it is Science Fiction from the mid-nineties.
I have to admit I have not read any of Laura Frantz’s books, although I have several on my Kindle. I need to remedy that!
This is my first. I actually wound up starting it Friday night and nearly saw the sun rise! I haven’t reached the end yet (silly kids wanting to be fed and all that) but so far it’s fantastic. 🙂
