Hi Everyone! It’s First Line Friday, so grab a book near you and share your first line in the comments below!
Today I’m sharing the first line from a book by an author who knows how to mix action and humor – The Accidental Guardian by Mary Connealy.
Here is the first line:
SOUTHWEST OF LAKE TAHOE, NEVADA
OCTOBER 1867Deborah Harkness came awake with a snap, her hand already steady on the six-gun under her pillow.
When Trace Riley finds the smoldering ruins of a small wagon train, he recognizes the hand behind the attack as the same group who left him as sole survivor years ago. Living off the wilderness since then, he’d finally carved out a home and started a herd–while serving as a self-appointed guardian of the trail, driving off dangerous men. He’d
hoped those days were over, but the latest attack shows he was wrong.
Deborah Harkness saved her younger sister and two toddlers during the attack, and now finds herself at the mercy of her rescuer. Trace offers the only shelter for miles around, and agrees to take them in until she can safely continue. His simple bachelor existence never anticipated kids and women in the picture and their arrival is unsettling–yet enticing.
Working to survive the winter and finally bring justice to the trail, Trace and Deborah find themselves drawn together–yet every day approaches the moment she’ll leave forever.

Today I shared the first couple of lines from Fiona Davis’ upcoming book “The Masterpiece” on my blog. But as I’m only about 25% into the book, let me share the first few lines of the chapter I’m currently reading.
“Clara had seen Levon only twice since he’d taken her class five days earlier: once in a crowded hallway, where he’d given her a salute as he brushed by, and another time on the concourse of the terminal, where she was certain he’d spotted her but pretended not to.
His puerile behavior annoyed her. She had no way of knowing if he’d upheld his end of the bet and insisted that Mr. Lorette keep her on.”
I hope you enjoy that. Happy weekend and enjoying your reading! 😀
Intriguing. Now I am curious what the bet was about. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday! My first line is from Dancing in the Rain by Eileen Rife and Jennifer Slattery:
“The letter was probably one more rejection Loni could add to all the others crumpled in her trash.”
Aww. Someone has had a tough time of it. I like the title. Thanks for sharing!
Great line! Here’s the first line from a book on my TBR shelf, Justice Buried by Patricia Bradley — It wasn’t too hot for 10:00 P.M. in the middle of May unless you were about to climb over the ledge of a fourteen-story building in downtown Memphis.
Happy Friday!
Um, no. Just no. Fourteen stories? There had better be a child in danger or something. No other reason would be good enough. Yikes.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Happy Friday!😊
My first line comes from The Mending by Susan Lantz Simpson……..
She sensed someone had entered the room, even though she’d been dozing and hadn’t heard the whoosh of the door opening or the squeak of athletic shoes on the tile floor. Her eyes felt glued shut.
Have a great weekend and happy reading!😊📚
Hmmm. She doesn’t seem too alarmed by this unknown presence. I wonder who it is.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Happy Friday! Over on my blog, I’m sharing the first line from The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond by Jaime Jo Wright. Here I’ll share the first line from Chapter 28 of the same book:
“Dusk had settled over Gossamer Pond. The mist rolled off its surface, making the mossy green algae glow in the moonlight.”
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
I have never seen algae glow. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I loved this book!
Happy Friday!
Today on my blog, I’m sharing the first line from Cara Putman’s novel A Promise Forged. Here I will share the first line from the novel I just started reading, Thief of Corinth by Tessa Afshar.
“The first time I climbed through a window and crept about secretly through a house, the moon sat high in the sky and I was running away from home.”
Hope you have a great weekend! 😀
This makes me think she is either in the middle of sneaking around again or about to compare her first time with a more recent occurrence. Either way, I’m intrigued. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Happy Friday!
This book was fun to read!
I’m reading The Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw by Christopher Healy right now, so here’s the first line: “Outlaws have too many feathers in their hats.”
Hallie @ Book by Book
Well if that isn’t an eye catching title, I don’t know what is. I would definitely flip that book to read the back if I saw it in the store. The first line makes it seem like a fun read, too. Thanks for sharing!
My first line is from Jen Turano’s Caught by Surprise
The first inkling Miss Temperance Flowerdew had that her rather mundane day was about to turn anything but mundane happened when a closed carriage trundled up beside her, keeping pace when her every step as she walked down the sidewall adjacent to Broadway.
This is on my TBR list. I have enjoyed many books by this author. On my blog, I’m sharing the first line from Secrets & Charades by Cindy Ervin Huff. Since I’m still reading the book, I will share the first two lines from chapter 8 here. “Jake finished hitching the wagon as the sun rose over the horizon. When he peered in the door of the soddie, Evangeline stood before him trying to press the wrinkles out of her green dress with her hands.” Have a wonderful weekend.
Happy Friday! I’m sharing from a different book on my blog today, but my current lunchtime read is the second Lady Alkmene Cozy Mystery, Diamonds of Death by Vivian Conroy. Here are the first lines:
“It was madness to do this on a night with a full moon. But then you had to be a little mad to do this work to begin with.”
Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday!
The book I shared on my blog today is A Rumored Fortune by Joanna Davidson Politano but it’s also the book I’m currently reading so I’ll share the first line from chapter 3 here: “Squinting into the fog made orange by the rising sun, I strode through the sprawling vineyard in a nightdress and my tattered old garden cloak and pondered the odd whispers of my servant.” Hope you have a great weekend with lots of reading time! 🙂
Thanks for sharing!
Happy Friday, Kathleen! My first line comes from The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
London, 1913
It was dark where she crouched but the little girl did as she’d been told.
Hmmm that sounds like a dangerous situation for a little girl.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I would definitely say this is a humorous line–happy Friday!
