First Line Friday – 08.02.19

first-line-friday-3

Welcome to First Line Fridays! The day we grab the book closest to us and share the first line. Join the fun and discover your next read!

This week I am sharing the first line from Full Steam Ahead, a book by one of my favorite authors, Karen Witemeyer. I am *finally* getting to listen to this one on Audible after my print copy suffered a sad fate at the hands of a toddler a few years ago before I got the chance to read it.

Here’s the first line:

Galveston, Texas
April 1851

Nicole Renard gripped her mother’s letter in her gloved hand as the carriage rattled down Bath Street, away from the docks.

about-the-book-2

Nicole Renard returns home to Galveston and finds her father deathly ill. Though she loves him, he’s only ever focused on what she’s not. Not male. Not married. Not able to run Renard Shipping.

Vowing to secure a suitable husband to give her father the heir he desires before it’s too late, Nicole sets out with the Renard family’s greatest treasure as her dowry: the highly coveted Lafitte Dagger. But when her father’s rivals come after the dagger, she’s forced to change her destination.

Darius Thornton has been a man obsessed since the fatal boiler explosion aboard the Louisiana that nearly took his life. He will do anything to stop such disasters. Even hire a female secretary. Sure he can ignore the distraction of her pretty face, he’s not sure how to proceed when drawn to her clever mind.

Nicole is determined not to let her odd employer scare her off with his explosive experiments, yet when respect and mutual attraction grows between them, a new fear arises. How can she acquire an heir for her father when her heart belongs to an unsuitable candidate? And worse, when her father’s rivals discover her hiding place, she will have to choose between that love and her family’s legacy.

  1. It is always fun to visit other blogs and see which books people choose to feature for FLF! This week I’m sharing the first line (and a few bonus lines…I just couldn’t help myself) from The Yellow Lantern by Angie Dicken.
Here I’ll share the first line from Chapter 8 of the same book.
“Nearly all the apple trees along the main drive had bloomed, their pale petals washed by moonlight against the dark sky.”

My first line is from The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey:

    Wrightsville, North Carolina
“ Fire ripped through Finn’s right shoulder, ricocheting down his arm.”

  3. I love this author too. She’s very good. On my blog, I’m sharing Lord of Her Heart by Sherrinda Kerchersid, which I absolutely loved. Here I will share the first line from chapter 8 in my current read, A Promised Land by Kimberly Grist. “Meriwether’s mouth watered as she pulled the iron skillet from the woodburning stove.” Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. Happy Friday! My first line is from “Brett, Billionaire Bodyguard” by Autumn Macarthur & Alexa Verde:

“Brett Jarvis grimaced, yawned, and snatched up his ringing cell phone. Two a.m. phone calls rarely meant good news, especially in his business.”

  5. Happy Friday!

On my blog, I’m sharing the first line from A Dangerous Legacy by Elizabeth Camden: https://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/08/01/first-line-friday-96/. I’m currently on chapter two of A Daring Venture by Camden. I’m on a Camden kick! 😀

“By the time Rosalind arrived at the crowded Manhattan restaurant to meet Mr. Drake, her nerves were wound as tight as a piano wire.”

Hope you have an excellent weekend! 😀❤📚

  6. This book sounds like a great read!

I’m sharing on my blog the first line from Love and Other Mistakes by Jessica Kate.

Natalie Groves eyed the bag of Gingerbread M&M’s on the other side of the office meeting room and prayed for a divine intervention of Red Sea proportions.

  7. I am a huge Karen Witemeyer fan! 🙂 I’m currently reading The Healing Jar by Wanda E. Brunstetter. I’m on chapter 19 so I’ll share the first line of that chapter. “Sara had just finished waiting on a customer when Brad came into the shop, wide-eyed and with deep furrows lining his forehead.”
